I just put some aftermarket pegs on my 2022 KLR650, and honestly, I'm a bit worried about the stock pin retainer, feels kinda sketchy to me. I'm curious, has anyone switched things up and started using cotter pins or any other secure methods for hitting the trails? Would love to hear your thoughts

Yeah, the stock setup isn't the most confidence inspiring, swap to stainless cotter pins or even safety wire for peace of mind..cheap, easy, and holds up better off road.

I'm running a 2013 "rescue" KLR. I swapped the stock pegs for cheap off road style, install involved a bit of mucking about, mostly involving a hammer and a file but I got there, I have just completed a 2500 kms round trip in WA (Aus) on asphalt and was very happy with the change, the extra grip allowed far better bracing and reduced fatigue,
I'm a convert, it's worth a bit of effort!

Use a small hairpin clip works way better for trail riding so you don't have to worry about the peg walking out but it has to make sure it's the right diameter for the peg pin so it doesn't bend under load
